Robot Mowers in the Landscape

Yesterday we presented a talk on robotic lawn mowers with Kathy Moseler of Paradise Robotics at the iLandscape Show that is currently going on in Schaumburg, IL.  In case you missed it, here are a few highlights of what we covered:

Robot Mower Basics

  • The majority of robot mowers work with a perimeter wire and a transmitter/receiver system.
  • The robot mower works within the perimeter of the wire, mowing in a random pattern, covering the whole area over time.
  • Robot mower perimeter wire has  less installation cost, and the same maintenance requirements, as a lawn sprinkler system.
  • Robot mowers improve grass health while reducing water and fertilizer requirements.
  • Robot mowers are quiet and do not pollute.
  • Robot mowers have significant safety benefits that reduce landscape business operating costs.

Design for People, Accommodate Robots

  • Site analysis to address low spots, obstacles (trees, fences, water features), steep slopes.
  • Use landscape to avoid potential mower conflicts: narrow lawn sections, tight corners…
  • Edgers of metal and plastic are not to be used with robotic mowers.
  • Hard surfaces such as pavers, mulch or gravel level with the lawn, work well.
  • Gentle curves allow the robot mower to reach all desired areas, avoid 90 degree turns.

Uses

Robot mowers are for more than use residential use:

  • Commercial & Industrial Settings – vineyards, solar fields
  • School & Office Campuses – environmentally friendly
  • Hotels & Resorts – no loud mowers disrupting pool time
  • Municipalities – free up staff to address other items

The popularity of robot mowing has been on the rise in current years.  In Europe, the market has fully adopted robot mowers.  With all the makes and models coming on to the market, there is a robot mower for almost any size yard, including large fields.

Lakewood, Colorado Fiberglass Pool Removal

Here is another fiberglass pool we removed, this time in Lakewood, CO.  The homeowners had a large backyard, however it was dominated by the pool, concrete deck and some aging shrubs.  They were not interested in using the pool – they were looking for more usable space.

Mack Land, LLC

As we typically do, we accessed the backyard through the side yard.  For this project, we did need to take a few sections of the neighbor’s fence down for access.  But this worked out well for the neighbor.  While onsite, we removed a raised planter he wanted gone, removed a lean-to shed the previous owner had constructed that was of no use to the new owner ans removed a small stone pond.

Mack Land, LLC

We removed the fiberglass pool entirely and greatly reduced the size of the concrete deck.  We also removed some of the overgrown shrubs to further open up the space.  After filling and compacting the pool, we brought the area to rough grade.  The homeowners wanted to take over from there.

No one removes more pools than Mack Land.  So if you live in the greater Denver or Chicago area and are looking to have your pool removed please make sure to contact us. Also make sure to visit our experience page to see some of our previous pool removal work.

Morton Grove, Illinois Vinyl Liner Pool Removal

We recently removed a vinyl liner pool in Morton Grove.  The homeowners had not been using the swimming pool in many years and were ready to see it go.  The cover had fallen in and the liner was starting to pull away from the walls.  The homeowner wanted to use the space for other sports and has plans to eventually install a sport court.

Mack Land, LLC

This pool was a typical vinyl liner pool, vermiculite bottom with steel walls.  After removing the sunken cover, vinyl liner and steel walls, we back-filled and compacted the area.  We also removed the concrete pool deck and fence that surrounded the pool.  Our trained operators have many options on getting the dirt to your backyard.  Even though this property appeared to have wide open access, there was an architectural element on the property that restricted access.

Mack Land, LLC

To finish, we spread grass seed and installed erosion control blanket to reduce the chance of dirt washing away.  While we did seed later in the year, the grass seed will go dormant over the winter and germinate in the spring once the ground temperature stays at 55 degrees.

Golden, Colorado Liner Pool Removal

This vinyl liner pool in Golden, Colorado is a typical style we see.

Mack Land, LLC

To access, we needed to remove a few sections of fence.  With this project, the client also wanted the hold hot tub and raised deck area removed.

We removed the vinyl liner, broke up the concrete pool bottom and removed the fiberglass sides.  The concrete pool deck was pulled into the hole and broken up as well to remain as structural fill.  We then brought clean fill dirt in and compacted in layers.

Mack Land, LLC

The client opted to have a new concrete patio poured and irrigation installed for the new lawn area.  The project was then finished with sod for an instant green backyard.  The clients and their dogs are enjoying the new backyard.

Centennial, Colorado Concrete Pool Removal

Here is another pool removal MackLand, LLC has completed in Centennial, Colorado.  We met with these clients while they were in the process of purchasing the home.  This pool had not been used in several years and was not a feature they wanted to keep.

Mack Land, LLC

This all concrete pool was squeezed into the side yard and surrounded by large trees keeping it in shade.  With a narrow walkway around it and so close to the house, there was not a lot of room to maneuver around the pool or usable space. Our clients did not want the pool and the headaches that were sure to come with it and opted for a level area for the kids to enjoy.

Mack Land, LLC

We broke up the pool and pool deck in its entirety and left it onsite as structural fill.  We them back filled with clean fill material and left them with a level area, pitching away from the house to use as they see fit.

Niles, Illinois Pool Removal

After many years of enjoying their pool, these homeowners decided it was time for the pool to go.  As is typical in more urban areas, the backyard was dominated by the pool and concrete pool deck.  They were anxious to have it removed and the area brought to lawn.  This was the first step in getting the house ready to sell in a few years.

Mack Land, LLC

Their pool was a typical style we see in northern Illinois – concrete pool bottom with 3-foot fiberglass sides.  We broke up all the concrete and hauled the fiberglass sides offsite.

Our use of smaller equipment really showed on this project.  With narrow side yards, our mini excavator and compact track loader were just the right fit to get the job done.  We removed their chain link fence to get in and reinstalled it once the project was complete.

Mack Land, LLC

After back filling, compacting, and bringing in topsoil to fine grade, we finished the project by rolling out sod to give them an instant back yard.  Now their dog has a place to play and any future owners will have a backyard to enjoy.

Golden, Colorado Pool Removal

With this in-ground pool, our clients were in the processes of purchasing this new home.  Removing the pool was a contingent part of the sale of the house and needed to be completed in a short time frame.  We understood the client’s concerns and were able to remove the pool properly and in the time frame given.

The pool was an all concrete pool surrounded by a large concrete pool deck.  All of the concrete was broken down and used it as structural fill in the deep end of the pool.  We also removed a small shed that had housed the pool equipment.

After back filling, we brought the area to rough grade and installed erosion control blanket to stabilize the dirt.  Since the client’s had not moved in yet, they wanted to wait and see how they were going to use the space.

Northbrook, IL Pool Removal

We receive many pool removal calls from Northbrook, IL and this is an example of another one we completed.  After purchasing their house, our clients had focused on renovating the inside.  Now their focus is on the backyard.  The pool and wood deck had not been used in years and dominated the space.  So this did not leave much room for their kids to play safely.  They called us to discuss their Northbrook, IL pool removal options and how to best use the space they had in the back yard.

Mack Land, LLC

This pool has fiberglass sides and a concrete bottom.  Because of the numerous large trees surrounding pool, maintenance was time consuming.  Even with an automatic pool cover, you still needed to clean off the leaves.

Mack Land, LLC

The client had previously looked into redoing the pool and pool deck but was shocked by the cost.  They opted to remove the pool and crumbling wood deck, and restore the area back to lawn with seed and blanket.  They now have a great area to play with their kids.

Arvada, Colorado Pool Removal

MackLand, LLC receives numerous calls about removing pools in Arvada, CO every year.  This in-ground pool dominated the backyard at this house.  Also, it had not been used in years and had fallen into disrepair.

Mack Land, LLC

The family was unsure if they were going to do, put the house up for rent or for sale.  However, they knew the pool needed to be removed to make the house more appealing to a broader market.  As the backyard and pool area was a tight space to maneuver in, our use of compact equipment really shone here.  It is what makes our process of removing pools stand out from the rest.

Mack Land, LLC

This pool was a liner pool with a sand bottom.  This is a common pool style we see in Colorado.  We removed the concrete walk around the pool and old concrete stairs under the deck.  The area was brought to rough grade, leaving the family with options on how they wanted to finish off the space.
