Here are two Longmont Pool Removal cases,

The first Longmont pool removal was as a result of a client who wanted to see if we could help solve a problem they were experiencing.

Spring was approaching and the client wanted to make better use of the back yard that this pool was dominating. They had young kids and family who needed more space to play in.

Not to mention that, as you can see from the photo, the pool had really become an eye sore and was no longer cost effective to maintain. In addition the presence of the pool caused grading issues along property lines that would be resolved with the removal of the pool.

As with all of our inground concrete pool removals, we followed very strict guidelines with this Longmont pool removal.

We pride ourselves in using low impact methods and machinery. In our quest for continuing improvement we recently purchased a new rubber track loader this year that was used for this job. This loader allows us to even further minimize impact as well as allowing us to work through adverse conditions if need be.

Update from our client: Over the summer, our client enjoyed putting in a lot of hard work installing sod, planting a tree and a creating boulder retaining wall themselves. They now have a nice lawn to let the kids and dogs play in.

In this second Longmont Pool Removal the customer had a similar request. They wanted to use the reclaimed space to produce a garden area with a paved surround.

We received an inquiry from our Colorado office from a prospect looking for a reputable Denver pool removal company. Removing a swimming pool is quite a big undertaking and clients like to do their due diligence before selecting a contractor. While chatting with this prospect these are some of the questions that they had.

Do you have any examples of other Denver pool removal jobs?

We have been in the Denver pool removal business for many years. We have removed many pools from the areas within a 15 mile radius of Denver, and have many satisfied customers. Take a look at just a few of these here.

Lakewood, CO

Greenwood Village, CO

Littleton, CO

What methods do you use?

We have continually refined our processes in order to do the job as quickly and efficiently as possibly. Long gone are the days of the wrecking ball. We are able to minimize collateral damage by using new and improved low impact techniques. Our main tool to achieve this is the compact excavator. We also make sure to do inspections long before we start to ensure that everything runs without a hitch. Additionally we are a complete turnkey solution company with ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) certifications allowing us to not only manage your Denver pool removal but also to leave you with a beautifully landscaped garden afterwards.

How environmentally conscious are you?

Where possible all the concrete associated with the pool removal is completely demolished and processed into 8” fracture concrete gravel similar to PGE and used as fill in the resultant hole. Because we process the concrete associated with the pool into fill material, also called our low impact method, it reduces heavy truck loads of concrete out and then heavy truck loads of fill back in reducing trauma to your property and public roads.

We also recycle all the pool heaters plus whatever other material is recyclable.

What about OSHA?

We continually keep abreast of the latest OSHA requirements to ensure a safe working environment for both our employees and for our customers.

When you picture a backyard pool demolition, you probably imagine massive excavators, roaring dump trucks, and a wide-open path to the project site. But if you live in established Denver neighborhoods like Washington Park, Hilltop, or the Highlands, you know that a “wide-open path” is a luxury few properties actually have.

Narrow urban alleys, low-hanging overhead power lines, tight property setbacks, and mature trees can easily turn a standard pool demolition into a high-stakes logistical puzzle.

At MackLand LLC, we recently tackled a classic Denver pool removal with extremely limited backyard access. The solution? An engineered approach that utilized a specialized rock slinger truck to safely, rapidly, and precisely fill the excavated space without tearing up the homeowner’s property.

Here is how we handle tight-access pool demolitions, and why a rock slinger is an absolute game-changer for urban Denver properties. Thanks to Ground Solutions for providing their expertise.

The Challenge of Urban Pool Demolition in Denver

In many Denver neighborhoods, backyards are landlocked by historic brick homes, tight fences, and pristine landscaping. After completing the heavy demolition phase of an inground pool, the next massive hurdle is getting dozens of tons of clean, structural fill dirt and gravel back into the hole.

Standard dump trucks need massive clearance to back up, tilt their beds, and unload. When access is restricted, traditional crews are often forced to resort to skid steers or motorized wheelbarrows, making hundreds of trips back and forth over a driveway or lawn. This adds days to the construction timeline, drives up labor costs, and virtually guarantees structural damage to your grass and topsoil. Instead of fighting the tight space, we change the equipment strategy.

The Solution: Precision Backfilling via Rock Slinger Truck

As captured in our recent Denver project video, we brought in a specialized rock slinger truck to bridge the gap between a narrow alleyway and the open pool cavity.

Unlike a standard dump truck that relies on gravity to drop material in a single pile, a rock slinger uses an advanced, high-speed conveyor belt system attached to an adjustable, pivoting arm. This allows our operator to literally launch a stream of aggregate and structural fill material over fences, past tight structural corners, and directly into the pool zone with pinpoint accuracy.

Why the Slinger Method is Perfect for Denver Homes:

Zero Yard Impact: The heavy delivery truck stays entirely on the hard, public right-of-way (like an alley or street). This keeps thousands of pounds of pressure off your private property, protecting underground utilities, patios, and sensitive landscaping.

Rapid Material Placement: What would normally take a small loader a full day of back-and-forth tracking can be completed by a slinger truck in a matter of hours.

Overhead and Lateral Precision: The conveyor stream can easily project material over 50 to 100 feet, effortlessly placing material right where our compaction team needs it, bypassing low-hanging trees or tight structures.

Integrating Our Core Denver Pool Removal Methods

While the rock slinger handles the heavy logistics of tight-access backfilling, it is just one component of our comprehensive, engineered approach to pool removals. No matter how restricted your access is, every MackLand project adheres to rigorous structural standards to ensure your backyard is permanently and safely restored.

Depending on your long-term goals for the property, your budget, and Denver municipal codes, we integrate the slinger technique into our two primary pool removal methods:

1. The Engineered Partial Pool Removal (The Structural Fill)

This is the most popular, cost-effective option for homeowners looking to reclaim their lawn.

The Demolition: We break down the top 3 to 4 feet of the pool’s concrete shell, coping, and surrounding concrete decking.

The Prep: Critical drainage holes are punched into the bottom of the remaining concrete shell to prevent the “bathtub effect” (where water gets trapped underground, creating a muddy swamp).

The Slinger Advantage: The rock slinger streams structural fill dirt and gravel directly into the deep end. Our ground crew works concurrently, using heavy vibratory plates and rammer compactors to achieve the perfect 95% compaction rate required to prevent future ground settling.

2. The Full Structural Pool Demolition

If you plan to build a home addition, an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit), a detached garage, or heavy hardscape features where the pool used to be, a full removal is required.

The Demolition: Every ounce of concrete, rebar, steel, and vinyl liner is completely broken down and hauled away.

The Backfill: The slinger truck streams certified structural fill into the clean, raw earth cavity layer by layer, matching strict engineering specifications so the ground is fully capable of supporting future architectural foundations.

Engineering Your Property’s New Chapter

A pool removal is not just about getting rid of old concrete; it’s about restoring the value, safety, and usability of your land. When you work with a team that pairs structural landscape architecture with specialized, high-efficiency equipment like rock slingers, you save time, minimize structural risk to your home, and ensure a level lawn that won’t sink five years down the road.

If you inherited a pool that no longer fits your lifestyle, or if you’ve been told by other contractors that your Denver backyard is “too tight” for a demolition crew to access, let’s talk. We specialize in finding structural, innovative paths forward for the most challenging properties in Colorado.

As you can see there is a lot to consider before choosing your Denver pool removal contractor. Get the facts, make an informed decision and be happy with the outcome.

Fill Dirt vs Planting Soil: Choosing the Right Material for Your Colorado Landscaping Project

When it comes to landscaping and outdoor construction in Colorado, understanding the difference between fill dirt vs planting soil can save time, money, and frustration. Although both materials look similar at first glance, their composition and purpose differ significantly — and using the wrong one can cause costly problems later.

What Is Fill Dirt?

Fill dirt is a dense, compactable material made primarily of subsoil — clay, sand, and rock fragments. It contains little or no organic matter, which makes it ideal for structural purposes rather than plant growth. Fill dirt is used to fill holes, level ground, or stabilize construction areas because it doesn’t shift or decompose over time.

Common Uses for Fill Dirt

Leveling uneven terrain

Backfilling areas after pool or pond removal

Building up land for patios, driveways, or foundations

Creating stable bases for retaining walls or outbuildings

What Is Planting Soil?

Planting soil, often called topsoil or garden soil, is rich in organic matter, nutrients, and microorganisms. It’s formulated to promote healthy plant growth by holding moisture and supporting root systems. Unlike fill dirt, planting soil isn’t suitable for compaction — it’s designed to breathe and nurture vegetation.

Common Uses for Planting Soil

Installing new lawns and gardens

Planting trees, shrubs, and flower beds

Improving poor-quality native soil

Blending with compost for enhanced fertility

Fill Dirt vs Planting Soil Comparison Table

Feature

Fill Dirt

Planting Soil

Purpose

Structural, for filling and grading

Nutrient-rich, for planting and landscaping

Organic Content

Very low

High in compost and organic matter

Drainage

Great for compaction

Retains moisture for plant roots

Best For

Construction, grading, and backfill

Lawns, gardens, and flower beds

Settling Over Time

Minimal

Moderate, as organic matter breaks down

Cost

Lower

Slightly higher due to added nutrients

How to Choose Between Fill Dirt vs Planting Soil

The decision between fill dirt vs planting soil depends entirely on your project goals. If your objective is to level or reshape your yard, fill dirt provides the stable base you need. But if you’re preparing to plant trees, grass, or a garden, planting soil is the right choice for healthy growth.

For many landscaping projects, professionals recommend a two-layer approach — compacted fill dirt for structure, topped with a layer of planting soil for vitality and aesthetics.

How to Use Fill Dirt

Fill dirt is an essential material for anyone tackling landscaping and construction projects. Unlike topsoil, which is rich in organic matter and ideal for planting, fill dirt is primarily subsoil composed of clay, sand, and small rocks. It’s designed for stability and compaction, making it perfect for creating solid foundations and reshaping terrain. Whether you’re leveling a backyard, filling in a depression, or building up areas for better drainage, understanding how to use fill dirt effectively can save you time, money, and headaches. In this complete guide for landscaping and construction in Denver, we’ll break down the key uses, step-by-step application tips, and best practices, with a special nod to resources for those in the Denver area.

Common Uses for Fill Dirt

Fill dirt’s versatility makes it a go-to choice for a wide range of landscaping and construction projects. Here are some of the most popular applications:

Leveling Uneven Ground: If your yard has dips, hills, or uneven spots, fill dirt can create a flat surface. This is especially useful for installing patios, driveways, or lawns where stability is key.

Building Foundations and Support: For structures like retaining walls, sheds, or even home additions, fill dirt provides a compactible base that prevents shifting or settling over time.

Improving Drainage: In areas prone to water pooling or erosion, fill dirt can be used to elevate low spots or create gentle slopes that direct water away from buildings and gardens.

Filling Holes or Depressions: Whether you’re removing an old pool, pond, or tree stump, fill dirt is ideal for backfilling these voids to restore a smooth landscape.

Landscaping Features: Raise garden beds, create berms for privacy, or shape contours in your yard to enhance aesthetics and functionality.

In regions like Denver, where terrain can be rocky and sloped, knowing how to use fill dirt is particularly valuable for adapting to local conditions and preventing issues like erosion in dry climates.

Step-by-Step Guide:

Using fill dirt isn’t complicated, but proper preparation and technique ensure long-lasting results in your landscaping and construction efforts. Follow these steps for a successful project:

Assess Your Project Needs: Start by evaluating the area. Measure the dimensions (length, width, and depth) to estimate how much fill dirt you’ll need. For accurate calculations, consider factors like soil compaction and settling—aim to add about 10% extra to account for this. A helpful resource for this is the comprehensive guide available here It provides detailed tips tailored to Denver’s unique environment, including how to handle slopes and arid conditions.

Prepare the Site: Clear the area of debris, vegetation, or old materials. If you’re filling a large hole, ensure the base is stable. For sloped areas, you may need to create terraces or use retaining materials to hold the dirt in place.

Source Quality Fill Dirt: Choose clean, debris-free fill dirt from a reputable supplier. Avoid materials with too much organic content, as they won’t compact well. In the Denver metro area, companies like Mackland LLC stand out for their high-quality fill dirt, screened topsoil, and gravel. They offer reliable delivery and expertise, making them a top choice for both residential and commercial landscaping and construction projects. As highlighted in their guide, partnering with a supplier who ensures contaminant-free dirt is crucial to avoid future problems.

Apply the Fill Dirt:

Spread the dirt in layers, ideally 6-8 inches thick at a time.

Use a shovel, rake, or heavy machinery (like a bobcat for larger jobs) to distribute it evenly.

Compact each layer with a tamper, roller, or plate compactor to eliminate air pockets and promote stability. Watering lightly between layers can help with compaction, especially in dry areas.

Finish and Maintain: Once filled, top with sod, seed, or mulch if it’s a landscaping project. Monitor for settling over the first few weeks and add more dirt as needed. For structural uses in construction, consult a professional to ensure it meets building codes.

Types of Fill Dirt

Tips for Success and Common Mistakes to Avoid

To get the most out of your fill dirt project in landscaping and construction:

Account for Compaction: Fill dirt settles, so overestimating slightly prevents sunken areas later.

Check Local Regulations: In places like Denver, permits may be required for large fills or changes to grading.

Budget Wisely: Factor in delivery costs, which can vary by distance. Bulk orders often come with discounts.

Safety First: Wear protective gear and use proper tools to avoid injury.

Avoid pitfalls like inaccurate measurements or ignoring settling, as outlined in Mackland LLC’s estimating guide. Guessing volumes by eye or skipping compaction can lead to uneven results and extra expenses.

Estimating Fill Dirt for a landscaping project in Denver? This comprehensive guide simplifies the process, helping you calculate the right amount of fill dirt for your project. Whether you’re leveling a yard, creating a garden bed, or filling a pool in the Denver metro area, we’ll show you how to avoid costly miscalculations and ensure your project runs smoothly.

What Is Fill Dirt and Why Use It?

Fill dirt, primarily subsoil with clay and small rocks, contains minimal organic material, making it perfect for stable, compactible foundations. In Denver’s varied terrain, it’s ideal for leveling uneven ground, supporting structures, or enhancing drainage in sloped areas. Use fill dirt to shape landscapes, elevate garden beds, or redirect water flow, reducing erosion and creating a solid base for your outdoor projects.

The Importance of Precise Fill Dirt Estimates

Getting your fill dirt calculations right is crucial for staying on budget. Over-ordering wastes money and materials, while under-ordering can delay your project and increase delivery costs. Accurate estimates ensure structural stability, prevent settling, and reduce environmental impact by minimizing excess hauling—key for Denver’s sustainability-focused community.

Key Considerations for Fill Dirt Calculations

To estimate fill dirt needs for your Denver project:

Determine Volume: Measure the length, width, and depth of the area.

Adjust for Terrain: Account for Denver’s slopes, rocky soils, or irregular shapes.

Project-Specific Depths: Different tasks, like foundations or landscaping, require varying fill depths.

Soil Compaction: Consider how the existing soil compacts and plan for settling.

Extra Allowance: Add a buffer to account for settling, especially in Denver’s dry climate.

Measuring Your Project Area Accurately

To measure your Denver site:

Outline the area requiring fill dirt.

Use a tape measure or measuring wheel to record length and width.

Measure depth at multiple points and calculate the average, factoring in uneven terrain.

Divide irregular areas into smaller, measurable sections.

Note all measurements for precise calculations.

How to Calculate Fill Dirt Volume

To determine the amount of fill dirt needed:

Multiply length x width x depth (in feet) to calculate cubic feet.

Convert cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27.

Round up to the nearest whole number to avoid shortages.

For compacted projects, add 10% to account for settling in Denver’s arid conditions.

Verify calculations manually or use an online tool for accuracy.

Simplify with an Online Fill Dirt Calculator

An online calculator streamlines the process:

Click calculate to get results in cubic yards.

Save time and reduce errors with this efficient tool.

Pitfalls to Avoid When Estimating Fill Dirt

Steer clear of these common mistakes:

Inaccurate Depth Measurements: Always measure depth at multiple points.

Ignoring Settling: Include extra dirt for compaction.

Assuming Uniform Quality: Check that the fill dirt is clean and debris-free.

Estimating by Eye: Avoid guessing volume, as it’s easy to miscalculate.

Delayed Ordering: Plan ahead to secure materials on time.

Choosing a Reliable Fill Dirt Supplier in Denver

Select a trustworthy supplier with these tips:

Transforming a Sloped Yard with Terraced Backyard Design

A sloped backyard can feel like a landscaping challenge, but with the right approach, it can become one of the most beautiful and functional features of your property. Instead of leaving the slope unused or fighting constant erosion, a terraced backyard design creates usable, level spaces that enhance both appearance and practicality.

Why Choose Terracing Instead of a Retaining Wall?

Retaining walls have long been the traditional solution for managing slopes. While they can be effective, they often result in a single flat space that lacks versatility. A terraced backyard design, on the other hand, provides multiple levels that can be tailored to different purposes—gardens, seating areas, outdoor kitchens, or even play zones for children.

Terracing also improves water management. Instead of water running straight down the slope, each terrace slows runoff, reducing erosion and helping plants thrive. It’s not just a functional upgrade—it’s a way to bring character and unique visual appeal to your outdoor space.

Design Considerations for Terraced Backyards

When planning a terraced backyard design, it’s important to think beyond aesthetics. Key factors include:

Slope grading and drainage – Proper planning ensures terraces won’t wash out during heavy rain.

Material choice – Stone, brick, or wood edging can complement your home’s architecture.

Intended use of each level – Garden beds, patios, fire pits, or lawns can be incorporated.

Accessibility – Well-placed steps or paths make moving between terraces effortless.

A professional approach ensures that the design not only looks beautiful but also remains stable and functional for years.

The Role of Compact Excavators

One of the biggest advantages in creating a terraced backyard design is the use of compact excavators. Unlike large, bulky equipment, compact excavators can navigate tight residential spaces with minimal disruption to the surrounding landscape. Mackland LLC specializes in using these tools to deliver precision terracing, ensuring each level is built with care and efficiency.

Removing an above ground pool can be a smart investment—especially if it’s outdated, costly to maintain, or no longer fits your lifestyle. In this guide, we’ll unpack above ground pool removal cost, explain common reasons homeowners decide to remove their pool, outline the process, and highlight why MackLand LLC is the top choice for your project.

Reasons to Remove Your Pool

MackLand LLC identifies several compelling reasons why homeowners opt for pool removal. Based on their expertise, here are some of the most common motives:

High Maintenance, Low Enjoyment
Pools demand ongoing repairs, heating, cleaning, and chemical treatments—often for just a few months of use each year. As MackLand notes, when a pool no longer delivers value, removal becomes a smarter financial choice.

Safety and Liability Concerns
Aging or unused pools pose risks—especially in families with kids or pets. Removing the pool eliminates those safety worries and can even reduce insurance premiums.

Increase Real Estate Value & Market Appeal
A neglected pool can hurt resale value. Buyers often prefer open, usable yard space over an expensive upkeep liability. MackLand points out that removing a dilapidated pool often boosts both value and marketability.

Reclaim Outdoor Space
Once removed, your pool area becomes flexible—perfect for gardens, patios, play zones, or open lawn space.

Environmental Benefits
Removing a pool helps conserve water (no more filling and chemical treatments) and reduces energy use—important in water-conscious areas.

What’s the Cost of Above Ground Pool Removal?

According to MackLand LLC’s pool removal guide, here’s the typical cost range:

Access Condition

Cost Estimate

Good Access (10?)

$1,500 – $3,000

Limited Access (6?)

$2,000 – $4,000

Poor Access

$4,000 – $6,000+

These prices reflect a basic above ground pool removal—disassembling the pool, recycling materials, backfilling the area, and restoring the lawn.

Above Ground Pool Removal Process (MackLand Style)

MackLand LLC employs a thorough and client-centric approach:

Utility locate call (“Julie”) one week prior

Drain pool water and safely discharge it

Disconnect utilities (electric, gas)

Disassemble pool, recycle materials (plastic, metal, fiberglass)

Import and compact topsoil, grade the area

Seed and install erosion control blanket, restoring the space to a lush lawn

Why Relocating an Above-Ground Pool Is Not a Good Idea

Homeowners sometimes consider relocating an above-ground pool when moving to a new property or redesigning their backyard. On the surface, it may seem like a cost-saving solution, but in reality, relocating an above-ground pool is rarely practical — and almost never recommended.

One of the biggest challenges comes from the fasteners, brackets, and plastic components that hold the structure together. These pieces are designed to be assembled once, and after years of exposure to sun, water, and chlorine, they become brittle and prone to breaking. During disassembly, even the most careful efforts often result in cracked connectors, warped sidewalls, or stripped fasteners. Once these essential parts are damaged, replacements are difficult to source — especially for older models that manufacturers no longer support.

Another hidden issue lies beneath the surface. Many above-ground pools rely on parts that are buried or in direct contact with the ground. These sections, such as the base rails or lower wall supports, often suffer from rust or corrosion that goes unnoticed until removal begins. When exposed, these rusted elements typically crumble or disintegrate, making it nearly impossible to reinstall the pool safely.

For these reasons, reputable pool companies generally refuse to take on relocation projects. The risk of structural failure, combined with the potential for water leaks and safety hazards, outweighs any perceived benefit. In most cases, it is far more cost-effective and reliable to invest in a new pool rather than attempting to relocate an old one.

Why Choose MackLand LLC?

Landscape architects by training, offering design-forward and ecosystem-sensitive solutions

Low-impact techniques—they protect your yard using lighter equipment and recycled fill materials, minimizing disruption

Pool Closure Report—ideal for selling your home, this official documentation shows the work was done correctly

30+ years of industry expertise in the Denver metro area

Final Thoughts

If you’re assessing above ground pool removal cost, consider not just the numbers—but the opportunity. Removal reduces maintenance burdens, enhances safety, frees up your yard, and can boost your home’s resale value.

MackLand LLC delivers a professional, eco-conscious removal process with design expertise and a stellar reputation—making them an excellent choice for Denver-area homeowners.

A backyard pond can be a beautiful feature, but over time, many homeowners in the Greater Denver area discover that maintaining a pond is more work than they expected. Algae growth, leaking liners, safety concerns, or property improvement projects often lead homeowners to consider pond removal. Just like pool removal, this process requires the right expertise to ensure it’s done safely and correctly. That’s where Mackland LLC comes in.

Things to Consider

Homeowners in Denver choose pond removal for a variety of reasons:

High Maintenance Costs – Ponds require ongoing upkeep, from water treatment to equipment repair.

Health & Safety Concerns – Stagnant water attracts mosquitoes and can be a hazard for children or pets.

Leaks and Damage – Old liners and structures break down, leading to water loss and costly repairs.

Reclaiming Space – Many homeowners prefer to repurpose the area for gardens, patios, or more usable lawn space.

Property Value – Removing a deteriorating or unused pond can actually make a property more appealing to potential buyers.

The Required Steps

While every pond is different, the pond removal process follows several important steps, much like swimming pool removal:

Drain the Water – All standing water must be safely drained to prevent flooding and erosion.

Remove Liners or Concrete – Old liners, pumps, and filtration systems are dismantled and hauled away.

Backfill and Compact – The empty space is filled with clean soil, compacted to prevent sinking.

Site Restoration – The area is leveled and prepped for its next use, whether it’s grass, a garden, or even a patio.

By working with a professional contractor, you ensure that the space is stable, safe, and ready for its new purpose.

Pond Removal vs. Pool Removal

Ponds and pools may seem different, but the removal process has similarities:

Both require careful draining to prevent water damage.

Structures must be dismantled and hauled away properly.

Backfilling and compaction are essential for future landscaping.

Professional expertise ensures safety and compliance with local codes.

This is why hiring an experienced removal contractor is key.

Creating a beautiful pond is a great idea, but it’s important to understand the challenges of maintaining one. When a pond isn’t properly cared for, it can quickly turn into a cesspool.

The Problem with Unmaintained Ponds

Ponds are susceptible to eutrophication, a process where they become overly enriched with nutrients. This often happens from runoff containing lawn fertilizers and pesticides. While these products make your lawn lush and green, they can have disastrous effects on aquatic ecosystems, killing fish and other wildlife.

Why Ponds Fail Over Time

Over time, sediment builds up, and the pond becomes shallower. This provides the perfect conditions for invasive aquatic plants and cattails to take over the center. For a pond to prevent cattail growth, it needs to be consistently deeper than three feet. Ideally, you only want aquatic plants to grow around the perimeter, where they can help filter out debris.

When a pond reaches this stage, often only frogs and toads can survive, and their nighttime chorus can be a nuisance for some. The costs and effort of maintenance are often too high, and many people give up.

Abandoned pools are susceptible to severe algae blooms, potentially including harmful species that pose health risks to both humans and animals.

Risks

Toxins: Some algae, particularly certain types of cyanobacteria (also known as blue-green algae), can produce toxins that can cause a range of symptoms, including skin irritation, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory problems, and neurological effects.

Bacteria and other contaminants: The stagnant water in an abandoned pool provides a breeding ground for other harmful microorganisms, such as bacteria, further increasing the risk of infection and illness.

Accidents: Algae blooms can make the pool surface extremely slippery, increasing the risk of falls and drowning, especially in poorly visible conditions.

Response

If you encounter an abandoned pool with a suspected algae bloom, do not attempt to treat it yourself. Instead, contact the relevant authorities immediately.

1. Identify the bloom

Observe the color and texture of the water. Algae blooms can appear in various colors, including shades of green, blue-green, yellow, brown, purple, white, or red.

Look for surface scums or paint-like streaks on the water.

Note any unpleasant odors, such as rotten eggs, which might indicate the presence of decaying algae.

2. Take precautions

Avoid contact: Do not touch the water, swim in it, or allow pets or livestock near it.

Don’t drink the water: Untreated surface water, especially with visible blooms, should never be consumed.

Don’t cook with or clean dishes with the water: Boiling will not eliminate toxins, according to the Florida Department of Health.

3. Report the issue

Local authorities: Contact your local environmental protection agency, health department, or code enforcement office to report the hazardous conditions.

Emergency hotline: If the bloom poses an immediate threat to human health or the environment, report it to the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

4. Seek medical attention if exposed

If you or your animals experience any symptoms after contact with the water (e.g., skin irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulties, etc.), seek immediate medical attention.

Important considerations

Determining whether an algae bloom is toxic requires laboratory testing, and even then, conditions can change rapidly.

Therefore, it’s best to err on the side of caution and treat any suspected bloom as potentially harmful.

By following these guidelines and reporting potentially dangerous algae blooms in abandoned pools, you can help protect yourself, your family, and your community.

Of course the most final way to get rid of the algae bloom problem would be to have your pool professionally removed.
