A backyard swimming pool is often envisioned as the ultimate center for summer entertaining, but for many homeowners across the Denver Metro area, the reality tells a different story. Between heavy freeze-thaw cycles in Front Range winters, rising water costs, and escalating home insurance premiums, an underutilized pool can quickly transform from a luxury asset into a significant financial burden.

If you find yourself spending more time cleaning, repairing, and worrying about your pool than actually enjoying it, you are not alone. Here are the top five reasons Denver homeowners are choosing professional swimming pool removal in Denver to reclaim their outdoor living space.

1. Eliminate High Maintenance Costs and Rising Utility Bills

Owning a pool in Colorado comes with steep ongoing expenses. Annual water fills, chemical balancing, pump energy consumption, and seasonal opening and closing services add up to thousands of dollars every single year. Furthermore, Denver’s high elevation and intense sun exposure accelerate chemical evaporation and liner wear. Removing your pool immediately eliminates these recurring maintenance costs, keeping that money in your pocket.

2. Protect Your Home Equity & Reduce Homeowner Liability

Under Colorado premises liability law, swimming pools are classified as an “attractive nuisance”—meaning homeowners can be held legally responsible if an uninvited neighborhood child or guest enters the yard and suffers an injury.

Insurance Surcharges: Standard homeowners insurance policies rarely offer sufficient coverage for pool accidents, forcing owners to pay for expensive umbrella liability policies.

Total Peace of Mind: Completing a swimming pool removal in Denver permanently eliminates pool-related safety hazards, protecting your home equity and lowering your insurance premiums.

3. Reclaim Usable Yard Space for Outdoor Living

Front Range backyards are valuable real estate. An aging, unused pool takes up a massive footprint that could otherwise be converted into functional, beautiful outdoor living space. By removing the pool, you open up possibilities for:

Custom hardscape patios and outdoor fire pits

Fully equipped outdoor kitchens and dining areas

Expansive, child- and pet-friendly lawn space

4. Avoid Costly Repairs Driven by Colorado’s Climate

The Denver area’s harsh climate is particularly brutal on pool structures. Winter freeze-thaw cycles cause ground shifting, leading to cracked concrete shells, broken underground plumbing lines, and torn vinyl liners. Repairing structural pool damage often costs tens of thousands of dollars—funds that are far better invested in a permanent pool removal and land reclamation project.

5. Expand Your Pool of Potential Home Buyers

While some home buyers view a pool as a bonus, many in the Denver market consider an old pool a major dealbreaker due to the implied maintenance and liability. Having an aging pool on your property can significantly shrink your buyer pool and delay a home sale. Removing the pool and restoring a clean, beautifully graded lawn broadens your home’s market appeal to standard residential buyers.

Reclaim Your Backyard with MackLand LLC

Removing a pool is not just about breaking up concrete—it requires engineering expertise to properly backfill and compact the soil so your land never settles or sinks down the road.

Here are two Longmont Pool Removal cases,

The first Longmont pool removal was as a result of a client who wanted to see if we could help solve a problem they were experiencing.

Spring was approaching and the client wanted to make better use of the back yard that this pool was dominating. They had young kids and family who needed more space to play in.

Not to mention that, as you can see from the photo, the pool had really become an eye sore and was no longer cost effective to maintain. In addition the presence of the pool caused grading issues along property lines that would be resolved with the removal of the pool.

As with all of our inground concrete pool removals, we followed very strict guidelines with this Longmont pool removal.

We pride ourselves in using low impact methods and machinery. In our quest for continuing improvement we recently purchased a new rubber track loader this year that was used for this job. This loader allows us to even further minimize impact as well as allowing us to work through adverse conditions if need be.

Update from our client: Over the summer, our client enjoyed putting in a lot of hard work installing sod, planting a tree and a creating boulder retaining wall themselves. They now have a nice lawn to let the kids and dogs play in.

In this second Longmont Pool Removal the customer had a similar request. They wanted to use the reclaimed space to produce a garden area with a paved surround.

We received an inquiry from our Colorado office from a prospect looking for a reputable Denver pool removal company. Removing a swimming pool is quite a big undertaking and clients like to do their due diligence before selecting a contractor. While chatting with this prospect these are some of the questions that they had.

Do you have any examples of other Denver pool removal jobs?

We have been in the Denver pool removal business for many years. We have removed many pools from the areas within a 15 mile radius of Denver, and have many satisfied customers. Take a look at just a few of these here.

Lakewood, CO

Greenwood Village, CO

Littleton, CO

What methods do you use?

We have continually refined our processes in order to do the job as quickly and efficiently as possibly. Long gone are the days of the wrecking ball. We are able to minimize collateral damage by using new and improved low impact techniques. Our main tool to achieve this is the compact excavator. We also make sure to do inspections long before we start to ensure that everything runs without a hitch. Additionally we are a complete turnkey solution company with ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) certifications allowing us to not only manage your Denver pool removal but also to leave you with a beautifully landscaped garden afterwards.

How environmentally conscious are you?

Where possible all the concrete associated with the pool removal is completely demolished and processed into 8” fracture concrete gravel similar to PGE and used as fill in the resultant hole. Because we process the concrete associated with the pool into fill material, also called our low impact method, it reduces heavy truck loads of concrete out and then heavy truck loads of fill back in reducing trauma to your property and public roads.

We also recycle all the pool heaters plus whatever other material is recyclable.

What about OSHA?

We continually keep abreast of the latest OSHA requirements to ensure a safe working environment for both our employees and for our customers.

When you picture a backyard pool demolition, you probably imagine massive excavators, roaring dump trucks, and a wide-open path to the project site. But if you live in established Denver neighborhoods like Washington Park, Hilltop, or the Highlands, you know that a “wide-open path” is a luxury few properties actually have.

Narrow urban alleys, low-hanging overhead power lines, tight property setbacks, and mature trees can easily turn a standard pool demolition into a high-stakes logistical puzzle.

At MackLand LLC, we recently tackled a classic Denver pool removal with extremely limited backyard access. The solution? An engineered approach that utilized a specialized rock slinger truck to safely, rapidly, and precisely fill the excavated space without tearing up the homeowner’s property.

Here is how we handle tight-access pool demolitions, and why a rock slinger is an absolute game-changer for urban Denver properties. Thanks to Ground Solutions for providing their expertise.

The Challenge of Urban Pool Demolition in Denver

In many Denver neighborhoods, backyards are landlocked by historic brick homes, tight fences, and pristine landscaping. After completing the heavy demolition phase of an inground pool, the next massive hurdle is getting dozens of tons of clean, structural fill dirt and gravel back into the hole.

Standard dump trucks need massive clearance to back up, tilt their beds, and unload. When access is restricted, traditional crews are often forced to resort to skid steers or motorized wheelbarrows, making hundreds of trips back and forth over a driveway or lawn. This adds days to the construction timeline, drives up labor costs, and virtually guarantees structural damage to your grass and topsoil. Instead of fighting the tight space, we change the equipment strategy.

The Solution: Precision Backfilling via Rock Slinger Truck

As captured in our recent Denver project video, we brought in a specialized rock slinger truck to bridge the gap between a narrow alleyway and the open pool cavity.

Unlike a standard dump truck that relies on gravity to drop material in a single pile, a rock slinger uses an advanced, high-speed conveyor belt system attached to an adjustable, pivoting arm. This allows our operator to literally launch a stream of aggregate and structural fill material over fences, past tight structural corners, and directly into the pool zone with pinpoint accuracy.

Why the Slinger Method is Perfect for Denver Homes:

Zero Yard Impact: The heavy delivery truck stays entirely on the hard, public right-of-way (like an alley or street). This keeps thousands of pounds of pressure off your private property, protecting underground utilities, patios, and sensitive landscaping.

Rapid Material Placement: What would normally take a small loader a full day of back-and-forth tracking can be completed by a slinger truck in a matter of hours.

Overhead and Lateral Precision: The conveyor stream can easily project material over 50 to 100 feet, effortlessly placing material right where our compaction team needs it, bypassing low-hanging trees or tight structures.

Integrating Our Core Denver Pool Removal Methods

While the rock slinger handles the heavy logistics of tight-access backfilling, it is just one component of our comprehensive, engineered approach to pool removals. No matter how restricted your access is, every MackLand project adheres to rigorous structural standards to ensure your backyard is permanently and safely restored.

Depending on your long-term goals for the property, your budget, and Denver municipal codes, we integrate the slinger technique into our two primary pool removal methods:

1. The Engineered Partial Pool Removal (The Structural Fill)

This is the most popular, cost-effective option for homeowners looking to reclaim their lawn.

The Demolition: We break down the top 3 to 4 feet of the pool’s concrete shell, coping, and surrounding concrete decking.

The Prep: Critical drainage holes are punched into the bottom of the remaining concrete shell to prevent the “bathtub effect” (where water gets trapped underground, creating a muddy swamp).

The Slinger Advantage: The rock slinger streams structural fill dirt and gravel directly into the deep end. Our ground crew works concurrently, using heavy vibratory plates and rammer compactors to achieve the perfect 95% compaction rate required to prevent future ground settling.

2. The Full Structural Pool Demolition

If you plan to build a home addition, an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit), a detached garage, or heavy hardscape features where the pool used to be, a full removal is required.

The Demolition: Every ounce of concrete, rebar, steel, and vinyl liner is completely broken down and hauled away.

The Backfill: The slinger truck streams certified structural fill into the clean, raw earth cavity layer by layer, matching strict engineering specifications so the ground is fully capable of supporting future architectural foundations.

Engineering Your Property’s New Chapter

A pool removal is not just about getting rid of old concrete; it’s about restoring the value, safety, and usability of your land. When you work with a team that pairs structural landscape architecture with specialized, high-efficiency equipment like rock slingers, you save time, minimize structural risk to your home, and ensure a level lawn that won’t sink five years down the road.

If you inherited a pool that no longer fits your lifestyle, or if you’ve been told by other contractors that your Denver backyard is “too tight” for a demolition crew to access, let’s talk. We specialize in finding structural, innovative paths forward for the most challenging properties in Colorado.

As you can see there is a lot to consider before choosing your Denver pool removal contractor. Get the facts, make an informed decision and be happy with the outcome.

Bill Bowen was a lesser known Coloradan architect. He began his private Architectural practice in 1962. Bill was partner in NBBB Architects and owner of BBB Architects. He practiced architecture for almost 50 years, winning many architectural awards.

Even after retirement, Bill Bowen continued to win numerous awards, including best smile and best sense of humor!

One of Bill’s masterpieces was a home that he built for himself in the 70’s. He did most of the construction himself and won a structural design award for the project.

The house had many unusual features including this UFO shaped swimming pool.

The current homeowners are both successful designers. The house influences their work every day and is an inspiration. They are committed to honoring and preserving the original architects’ ideas. The pool was in a bad state of disrepair and the owners had some decisions to make.

Mackland LLC is the well know and respected Golden Colorado pool removal company. Our reputation and our unique Pool Removal Process is what lead the owners of this house to contact us. After some consultation it was decided to remove the pool but preserve the shape that it previously occupied converting it to synthetic turf.

This was a challenging mountain terrain project that needed a specialized solution. We used a combination of rock slinger trucks and a blower truck to place the fill material.

The Marshall Fire was a fire that started on December 30, 2021, shortly before 10:30 a.m. MST, as a grass fire in Boulder County, Colorado.
In terms of structures lost, it is the most destructive fire in Colorado history. By of the evening of January 1, 2022, an estimated 1084 structures, including houses, a hotel and at least one shopping center, had burned. The rapidly spreading Marshall Fire damaged 149 more.

This was a new type of suburban fire never seen before. In the past wildfires only occurred in the foothills. As a result many home owners found themselves underinsured. In addition the skyrocketing cost to rebuild as a result of inflation, high fuel cost and supply chain deficits added to the problem. After all the insurance companies payed out there was a race to rebuild or sell. This began over extending local architects, engineers and contractors with massive influx of work. Securing local resources to rebuild was key for these victims to moving on with out further delay waiting for local resources to free up.

Boulder Colorado Pool Removal

Mackland, Denver’s premium Pool Removal company was approached to remove a swimming pool that sustained major damage during the Marshall Fire. We offered a discounted price to help this client and expedited the project quickly so they could sell the lot while the real estate market was hot.

Planting Tight Spaces need not be a challenge. Not all landscape planting spaces are wide open. Sometimes space is more limited than we would like. There are plants out there to fit in the narrow space along your walkway or that small strip between the sidewalk and your fence. Below are some ideas to get you thinking about what may work for you and your tight planting area. So you have now generated some extra space after having had your Denver pool removed. Now what?

Even the savviest home gardener can struggle to see the potential in a Planting Tight Spaces, and when that pocket garden is on the outside of the fence, is it even worth bothering about? The challenges are many: difficult to water, reflected heat from the sidewalk, careless feet and often poor soil.

Yet these perimeter plantings can act as a picture frame for the inner garden and home beyond. When you read how these designers and homeowners treated their pocket gardens, you may be tempted to rethink the location of your own boundary fence just to take advantage of this unique design opportunity.

1. A Romantic Border

A classic white picket fence festooned with fragrant roses — what could be more romantic? The beauty of this one is that passersby can enjoy the flowers, since they’re planted on the outside of the fence.

Key design features:

2. A Contemporary Home

The strong geometric lines of contemporary architecture call for a foliage-focused planting, and this narrow roadside border delivers.

3. An Entry That Establishes a Theme

A garden entrance should create a sense of anticipation, setting the scene for what is beyond. Plantings on the street side of this lattice fence do just that.

Key design features:

An interesting combination of heights and textures makes this tiny planting pocket seem much larger than it really is.

Several of these plants can also be glimpsed within the main garden.

Color note:

Subdued tones of tan and pink allow the eye to move through the garden entrance.

Plant selection:

This is a particularly hot, dry border, so these plants have been selected for their tenacity.

Mexican feather grass (Stipa tenuissima), feather reed grass(Calamgrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’)and sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ (Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’) provide long-term interest.

4. Planting Strips That Link Multiple Homes

Planned communities such as this one in Kirkland, Washington, have their own challenges, not the least of which is abiding by homeowners association regulations.

These planting strips allow for individuality while maintaining a cohesive design.

Key design features:

A narrow planting strip adjacent to the sidewalk lies beyond each homeowner’s split-rail fence.

Several plants are repeated through all the gardens, while there’s still room for some unique choices.

Color note:

Shades of blue, lavender and green are repeated throughout.

Plant selection:

All the plants are lower than the height of the split-rail fence; allowing the fence to be glimpsed down the entire sidewalk gives the illusion of one continuous border.

Each plant typically has a mounding habit, creating a sense of uniformity.

Lavender(Lavandula spp)and sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ (Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’) are planted throughout these pocket gardens as well as in the adjacent communal garden areas. Bronze-colored coral bells (Heuchera hyb.) and daylilies (Hemerocallis spp) are also used.

So, as you can see while Planting Tight Spaces needs a different approach. There as many options to consider.

Before you rule out a home with an out-of-date pool, read these 6 Genius New Uses for an Old Pool.

Swimming pools have many virtues, especially during scorching summers. But they can easily become eyesores — not to mention money pits — especially if they leak or have other functional issues.

Instead of going through the costly (and sometimes unsuccessful) process of bringing an old swimming pool up to date, why not turn it into an entirely new, seriously cool feature that sets your home apart?

From a detached, lower-level studio space to a fully realized aquaponic farm, here are six smart ideas (some DIY projects and some that require a little professional help) to convert your old swimming pool into something useful, beautiful, or both!

1. The sunken patio

2. The practical deck

3. The detached studio

4. The peaceful pond

5. The water-wise garden

6. The food-producing farm

While you might not be ready to go full-scale eco-farm, the project proves that an old pool site might be just the spot to pull off the herb-and-veggie garden of your dreams.

As you can see there are a huge number of ideas of how to use that newly reclaimed space after having had your pool removed.
Have you recently purchase a house with an old pool that hasn’t been opened in years? Has the pool in your backyard seen better days? Is your liner ripped or the plaster cracked? Are you wondering if there is a chance of Bringing Life Back to an Old Pool? Perhaps the time has come to remove it?

Bringing Life Back to an Old Pool – First Steps

The first step with concrete or gunite pools is to drain the water to best assess the situation. Depending on how long it has been sitting, you may need to clear out leaves and other debris as well. With vinyl liner and fiberglass pools, there is some risk involved with draining the pool. Fiberglass pools are lightweight and can move or float without the weight of the water holding it in place. Vinyl liners can shrink and shift.

Water Talk

If you opt to not drain the pool completely and the water is questionably green, time and effort can bring it back to clear. A process of removing all the organic debris, cleaning the sides and bottom, checking the water balance, shocking the pool and filtering the water can bring it back.

Alternatively, you can fill the pool with new water. We recommend using a water truck service. You can fill the pool from your hose but that takes time and with well water, you may be filling the pool with water high in minerals or metals.

Repairs

Now you move on to the repairs. Concrete or gunite pools can have stains, rough texture, or leaks. All of these should be addressed and repaired prior to resurfacing. The pool will need to be prepped for the new surface, this can be achieved through sand blasting or hydro blasting. Then the pool surface finish material can be installed.

Denver weather report

With vinyl liner pools, you may need to install a new liner. You may need new faceplates and gaskets as well.

So, as you can see there are many pros and cons as well as many decisions to be made about Bringing Life Back to an Old Pool. We have been involved in the Denver Pool Removal business for many years.
