Deadly algae bloom in abandoned pool: Risks and response

Abandoned pools are susceptible to severe algae blooms, potentially including harmful species that pose health risks to both humans and animals.

Risks

Toxins: Some algae, particularly certain types of cyanobacteria (also known as blue-green algae), can produce toxins that can cause a range of symptoms, including skin irritation, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory problems, and neurological effects.

Bacteria and other contaminants: The stagnant water in an abandoned pool provides a breeding ground for other harmful microorganisms, such as bacteria, further increasing the risk of infection and illness.

Accidents: Algae blooms can make the pool surface extremely slippery, increasing the risk of falls and drowning, especially in poorly visible conditions.

Response

If you encounter an abandoned pool with a suspected algae bloom, do not attempt to treat it yourself. Instead, contact the relevant authorities immediately.

1. Identify the bloom

Observe the color and texture of the water. Algae blooms can appear in various colors, including shades of green, blue-green, yellow, brown, purple, white, or red.

Look for surface scums or paint-like streaks on the water.

Note any unpleasant odors, such as rotten eggs, which might indicate the presence of decaying algae.

2. Take precautions

Avoid contact: Do not touch the water, swim in it, or allow pets or livestock near it.

Don’t drink the water: Untreated surface water, especially with visible blooms, should never be consumed.

Don’t cook with or clean dishes with the water: Boiling will not eliminate toxins, according to the Florida Department of Health.

3. Report the issue

Local authorities: Contact your local environmental protection agency, health department, or code enforcement office to report the hazardous conditions.

Emergency hotline: If the bloom poses an immediate threat to human health or the environment, report it to the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

4. Seek medical attention if exposed

If you or your animals experience any symptoms after contact with the water (e.g., skin irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulties, etc.), seek immediate medical attention.

Important considerations

Determining whether an algae bloom is toxic requires laboratory testing, and even then, conditions can change rapidly.

Therefore, it’s best to err on the side of caution and treat any suspected bloom as potentially harmful.

By following these guidelines and reporting potentially dangerous algae blooms in abandoned pools, you can help protect yourself, your family, and your community.

Of course the most final way to get rid of the algae bloom problem would be to have your pool professionally removed.

If you’re a homeowner researching pool removal in Westminster Colorado, you’re likely weighing the pros and cons of keeping an old or underused swimming pool. In many cases, removing a pool is not just a practical decision—it’s a smart investment in your property, safety, and long-term savings.

At Mackand LLC, we specialize in eco-friendly, low-impact pool removal that helps Colorado homeowners reclaim their outdoor space with confidence. Here’s why pool removal is often the best move in Westminster—and why our team is trusted to do it right.

Colorado’s Climate Is Tough on Pools

Unlike warmer coastal states, Westminster, Colorado has a relatively short swimming season. Late spring snowfalls, early fall freezes, and unpredictable hailstorms can cause significant wear and tear on your pool’s structure and equipment.

Maintaining a pool in Colorado’s climate means dealing with repairs, expensive heating costs, and limited use—often just a few months each year. If you’re not getting consistent value from your pool, removal might be the better option.

Pool Maintenance Costs Add Up Fast

The average homeowner can spend $3,000 to $5,000 per year on pool maintenance in Westminster, including:

Chemicals and cleaning supplies

Repairs and resurfacing

Utility bills for pumps and heating

Regular servicing and inspections

That’s a lot of time and money for something that may not be used frequently. Removing your pool eliminates these recurring costs, freeing up your budget for more meaningful home improvements.

Safety First: Pools Can Be a Hazard

Even with a fence or cover, pools pose a real safety risk, especially for families with small children, grandchildren, or pets. A pool removal in Westminster Colorado not only improves peace of mind, but it also reduces liability concerns—a smart move for homeowners planning to sell in the near future.

Improve Property Value and Use Your Space Better

In many cases, removing a deteriorating or unused pool can actually increase your home’s resale value. Buyers in Westminster are often more interested in a versatile yard than taking on the maintenance of an older pool.

After pool removal, you can reclaim that space for:

Landscaping and gardening

Patios or outdoor kitchens

Play areas or recreational zones

Home expansions or accessory dwelling units (ADUs)

Thinking of Selling your property with a Pool in Disrepair?

The advantages of removing a pool before the sale of the house

A pool in disrepair can significantly reduce the value, demand, and time it can take to sell a property. Here is why you should consider removing the pool now:

Pool in disrepair – Introduction

Most new home buyers are not looking for a pool so removing the undesirable pool increases demand and price. In fact, most buyers are not even going to see the listing if the pool box is checked on the online listing.

Listing a house with a pool in disrepair can give the property a negative vibe turning off buyers when they show up. Sure you can put pool pictures last, but does that really work? To properly photograph a pool for a listing, it should ideally be photographed in the summer with lush landscape and clear well-maintained water.

Reclaiming Space

Removing the pool always makes the back yard appear more spacious and versatile adding value.

The pool may be taking up too much of the backyard. Outdoor pools in the Denver climate can only be utilized for up to four months out of the year. Future buyers who may have kids and dogs need space for them to run and play. That can add a lot more value than the old pool. A wide-open grassy backyard is what most buyers are looking for. Removing the pool increases value and utility.

Best Strategy

Public Waterparks, Public pools, and HOA Pools may be in close proximity to the residence. This diminishes the utility and value that the pool adds to the property.

Pools need to comply with local codes. Pool fencing, Lockable Gate, Pool Cover etc. If your property is not in compliance this can come to the surface at the home inspection phase of the sale. This is not a good position for the seller.

It’s not a good strategy to try and sell the house with a pool in disrepair and then remove the pool and relist if the property does not sell. This is because too much time is lost, markets may turn. If the property does sell, they’re never going to know the money they left on the table if the pool was removed.

The Financial aspects

Taking the cost of the pool removal off the sale of the house is subjective and It adds the opportunity for the buyer to last minute try and negotiate a better price at closing. A basic pool removal can be at minimal cost. A new buyer may want a new patio or landscaping. Removing the pool presents them with the space to do this without the pool removal cost.

In a buyers’ market, a pool in disrepair can be a lot more of an open door to haggle the price of the house down.

Most pools have a designed life span of about 30 years. After that in most cases they need a complete redo or major overhaul. Some buyers know this some don’t. Good karma is always a good practice. The seller may know that the pool is costing too much to operate or knows it is dysfunctional. Therefore selling the illusion that the pool can put back to use can really financially hurt that next buyer.

Conclusion

A pool in disrepair can be a deal breaker last minute or hold up the sale.

In this Greenwood Village Pool Removal the customer had an unusual request.
He wanted the concrete pool deck to be left behind. This would require us to just remove the swimming pool shell without doing any damage to the surround. Many customers think that by doing this it will save money on demolition. In reality though it makes the job a lot harder.

It would also mean that it would be difficult to fully drain the pool.
There would also be the risk that a lot of dirt that was previously supported by the walls of the pool shell would collapse in.
In this instance the 20 year old concrete deck work was very well done and had sentimental value to the owner. His vision was to fill in the void with artificial turf topped dirt to be used as a play area for his soon to be born granddaughter. This could result in a cheap looking end result as opposed to a complete makeover but the customer is always right and we proceeded with this Greenwood Village Pool Removal.

Introduction

A swimming pool can be a source of endless enjoyment during its prime years, but as time goes by, it can also become a source of headaches and financial strain. If you find yourself with an old and dilapidated swimming pool that’s causing more problems than joy, you’re not alone. Many homeowners face the dilemma of whether to keep or remove an aging pool. In this article, we’ll delve into the compelling reasons why opting for pool removal might be the best decision you’ll make.

This Aurora Colorado pool removal

In this Aurora Colorado Pool Removal this was an old family home now vacant due to illness of the owner. It was time to sell the home but the pool was in a bad state of disrepair. Getting it up an running again was going to cost too much so the decision was made to have it removed.

The Justification for Pool Removal

1. Costly Repairs and Maintenance

As a swimming pool ages, it becomes increasingly susceptible to wear and tear. Routine maintenance, repairs, and chemical treatments can quickly add up, making the cost of keeping it in good condition a significant financial burden. By removing the pool, you can free yourself from ongoing expenses and redirect your funds to more worthwhile investments.

2. Safety Concerns

Older pools may not meet the safety standards and regulations in place today. This can pose a risk to your family and anyone who visits your property. Removing the pool eliminates these safety concerns, ensuring peace of mind for you and your loved ones.

3. Unused and Unattractive

If your pool has fallen into disuse and become an eyesore in your backyard, it’s time to reassess its value. Unused pools not only take up valuable space but can also detract from the overall aesthetics of your property. By removing the pool, you can reclaim your outdoor space and enhance your property’s curb appeal.

After Removal

4. Expanding Possibilities

Once the pool is gone, you gain a blank canvas to explore new landscaping possibilities. Transform your former pool area into a lush garden, an outdoor living space, or a playground for your children or grandchildren. The options are limited only by your imagination.

5. Environmental Benefits of Pool Removal

Swimming pool removal can be an environmentally responsible choice. By eliminating the need for pool chemicals and reducing water usage, you can lessen your environmental impact. Additionally, the space gained can be used for eco-friendly landscaping or even a small vegetable garden.

Loveland Colorado Pool Removal

6. Increased Property Value after Aurora Colorado Pool Removal

While it may seem counterintuitive, removing a dilapidated pool can increase the value of your property. Many potential buyers may view an old pool as a liability rather than an asset. A well-landscaped, spacious yard, on the other hand, appeals to a broader range of buyers and can lead to a higher resale value.

Aurora Colorado Pool Removal Conclusion

Removing an old and dilapidated swimming pool is a decision that offers numerous benefits, from cost savings and enhanced safety to increased property value and newfound possibilities for your outdoor space. If your pool has become more of a burden than a source of enjoyment, it might be time to consider pool removal as a practical and beneficial choice for your home and lifestyle.

Swimming Pool Demolition and Removal Services

This is another project where we did more than just remove the vinyl liner pool. It is a perfect example of our Low Impact Pool Removal process. All plastics and metals associated with the pool get hauled away and recycled. All concrete associated with the pool is completely demolished. It is processed into 8” fracture concrete gravel similar to PGE and used as fill. This method is lower impact and more cost effective because less has to be hauled in and out to fill in the pool.

TYPES OF SWIMMING POOL REMOVALS

Full In-Ground Pool Removal
Pool is completely demolished and removed offsite and the area is restored to lawn. For home owners that may have plans for a home addition or garage in the same area as the pool. No concrete will remain onsite.

Low Impact Swimming Pool Removal

All plastics and metals associated with the pool get hauled away and recycled. All concrete associated with the pool is completely demolished and processed into 8” fracture concrete gravel similar to PGE and used as
fill. Pool area is restored to lawn. This method is lower impact and more cost effective because less has to be hauled in and out to fill in the pool.

Basic Swimming Pool Removal

Bottom of pool is perforated with holes for water to drain and sides of the pool are removed 24” below final grade. Pool area is restored to lawn.

Above Ground Swimming Pool Removal

Pool will be completely disassembled, hauled away and area will be Restored to lawn.

TYPICAL SCOPE OF SERVICE FOR MOST POOL REMOVALS

• Obtain all permits, provide drawings as needed, and pay all permit fees
• Call in a Utility Locate
• Pump out pool water
• Protect trees as needed
• Remove and reinstall fence for access
• Saw cut pool deck away from any concrete to remain
• Disconnect electric associated with the pool at main circuit breaker in house
• Disconnect gas line – typically capped at gas meter
• Demolish/remove swimming pool
• Import and compact clay fill material
• Import and distribute 6” of top soil over the entire disturbed area
• Seed and install erosion control blanket
• Repair irrigation as needed

OUR PROCESS

The process starts with two on staff landscape architects that work through all the various facets of your pool removal project such as: obtaining the permits, tree removals, irrigation conflicts, and can design build your
future patio or landscape your entire back yard.

Our process goes above and beyond the typical village, city or county codes for pool removals. Most pool removal codes just require the bottom of the pool be perforated and the sides of the pool be removed 24” below grade, what we call a basic pool removal. MackLand, LLC has developed the low impact method to complete pool removals in a safe and timely minor while reducing impact to your property.

The one thing that is significant about our pool removal process is that we are processing all concrete associated with the pool into a structural fill material classified as PGE, 8” minus recycled fractured concrete
gravel with fines. This material is often used for sub base under public roads. Because we process the concrete associated with the pool into fill material, also called our low impact method, it reduces heavy truck loads of
concrete out and then heavy truck loads of fill back in reducing trauma to your property and public roads.

The right equipment and the right size equipment is extremely important. Mack prefers to use two rubber tracked backhoe excavators that have an operating weight of around 12,000 lbs to complete the pool demolition work. Using a backhoe is key to completing the project safely and quickly. A skid steer/Bobcat can easily get stuck in the deep end of the pool or get damaged while removing the pool side walls because the machine does not have the reach to keep a safe distance. Most under qualified contractors will use a skid steer and say they have done it before but they will be risking their safety, and may struggle and cause unnecessary damage to their machine. There are also a lot of other contractors, like excavation contractors, that will give you a great price but will come with a 26,000 lb machine with steel tracks and cause unnecessarily trauma to your property and not worry about it because it is not their job to restore your yard.

Having the right equipment and the having the right approach are key to the success of the project.

Average Cost

GOOD ACCESS (10’ WIDTH)

LIMITED (6’ WIDTH)

POOR ACCESS

Full Pool Removal

$10 – 14K

$12 – 16K

$20K and up

Low Impact Pool Removal

$7.5 – 10K

$10 – 14K

$15K and up

Basic Pool Removal

$6.5 – 9K

$7 – 12K

$12K and up

Above Ground Pool Removal

$1.5 – 3K

$2 – 4K

$4 – 6K

Comparing apples to apples is just about impossible. In most cases we provide a scope of services that you would have to go multiple contractors to get the same scope of work completed. This is something anyone
can do, but to do it correctly in a timely manner you need to have the right equipment and experience. Anyone can fill in hole, but the difference is the in the possibility of settling and impact/trauma to your property by the
equipment being used. An excavation company may be cheaper, but they are not going to restore damage to your yard and will likely want to use over kill equipment causing unnecessary trauma to your property. Other
landscape companies do not have the equipment or demolition knowledge to complete the project in safe timely manner without future issues.

MACKLAND LOW IMPACT POOL REMOVAL METHOD ADVANTAGES

Mack operates in a timely safe professional manner and is also a landscape design build contractor.

Mack is a one stop swimming pool removal shop helping to restore your back yard to an aesthetically pleasing usable space.

We mitigate the impact this process has on your property.

Mack will respect your trees and other plants.

By using the concrete as fill, we reduce heavy truck loads of concrete out and back in with fill dirt.

The processed fill concrete, PGE – 10” recycled fractured concrete gravel with fines, acts like a stable drainage layer improving water infiltration in the area.

Because the pool concrete is processes in to PGE, it can be easily removed as needed for future addition.

MACKLAND – SAFETY, PRIORITY NUMBER ONE

We pride ourselves with keeping a safe and secure job site at all times.
• Our concrete cutting is always done by wet cutting, which eliminates flying debris and dust.
• Safety gear worn by all MackLand employees while on site.
• Safety Fence, to keep people out of the job site and safe from harm.
• Road-side traffic control, eliminates any risk of accidents while moving machinery or fill dirt to and from the job site to the street.

COMMON MISTAKES IN POOL REMOVALS

• The biggest mistake is hiring a company that is not qualified or trying to attempt it yourself.
• It is very possible to create unforeseen problems in future by leaving any part of the pool intact.
• It extremely easy to have an inexperienced machine operator fall in the pool with their machine and get hurt if they do not respect the danger.
• Contractors or home owners without experience demolishing vertical walls will likely damage the equipment they are using or get hurt.
• A bobcat or a skid steer is not a good machine to demolish a pool with.
• Some contractors try and use over kill equipment causing unnecessary impact your property and roads.
• Hiring someone that will take forever to complete the project.
• Having the wrong strategy to complete the project.
• Choosing the wrong access route that will cause unnecessary impact to property.
• Accessing pool area without protecting or avoiding sensitive trees.
• Using sod instead of seed.

LOW IMPACT PARTIAL POOL REMOVAL

When MackLand LLC removes your pool, we bring the ground back to its native condition. We break up the pool bottom for proper drainage and compaction. This process ensures for zero settling issues and various
other problems that can occur if the removals aren’t preformed in this manner. We strongly suggest that you remove the entire pool for the best possible ground conditions. As you can see our competitors don’t stack up
with MackLand.

FILL MATERIAL

MackLand, LLC uses local fill dirt from residential projects only in compliance with all IL, WI, CO, and Federal EPA Codes. Mack also inspects and rejects loads of dirt that are not suitable. We make sure you are getting
local, uncontaminated fill dirt that has the right soil structure to reduce settling issues.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Settling is the most common question asked. To date MackLand, LLC has never had an issue with settling on a pool removal. Why? Because we fill in thin even layers and compact it evenly as we fill the pool in.

How long will it take?
Most in ground pool removals are completed in 3-7 days. Above ground pool removals are completed in one day.

Who gets the permits?
MackLand, LLC will obtain all permits and provide drawings as needed as part of our services.

How do we get started?
MackLand, LLC will start the permit process with a signed contract and a copy of your plat of survey.

What is PGE?
PGE is a regional classification of coarse gravel. PGE is 6-10” minus recycled fractured concrete gravel with fines suitable for use as sub base for roads or for general structural fill. MackLand, LLC will process all concrete
associated with the pool into PGE and use it as fill material.

What is better sod or seed?
Seed is by far the best way to go. Grass grown from seed will develop a more drought tolerant root system and blend into your existing lawn better. Also with sod it very possible to get grubs and other pests from the
sod farm.

When do you need the project deposit?
MackLand, LLC prefers to pick up the deposit check in person after the permits are approved. Mack will deliver the permits and pick up the deposit check at that time. The remaining balance is due on completion.
