In this Greenwood Village Pool Removal the customer had an unusual request. He wanted the concrete pool deck to be left behind. This would require us to just remove the swimming pool shell without doing any damage to the surround. Many customers think that by doing this it will save money on demolition. In reality though it makes the job a lot harder.
It would also mean that it would be difficult to fully drain the pool. There would also be the risk that a lot of dirt that was previously supported by the walls of the pool shell would collapse in. In this instance the 20 year old concrete deck work was very well done and had sentimental value to the owner. His vision was to fill in the void with artificial turf topped dirt to be used as a play area for his soon to be born granddaughter. This could result in a cheap looking end result as opposed to a complete makeover but the customer is always right and we proceeded with this Greenwood Village Pool Removal.
In this Centennial Pool Removal we were approached by a realtor who introduced us to the client.
This was a very unique property with a lot of character. It had unique masonry work all over and a back yard with mature pine trees with a mountain forest feel . As often happens the client was not thinking much about the 40 year old fiberglass pool until they contacted a realtor to sell the house. This pool was loved and used by this family for most of the 25 years they lived there but over the last 5 to 8 years the pool was not used much. While the surrounding pine trees added a lot of character to the back yard it’s almost impossible to maintain a swimming pool efficiently under the canopy of large trees like this. Even with an automatic cover you still need to get the pine needs off the cover before you open. Pine needles really affect water clarity and pH .
We have been removing swimming pools in the greater Denver area for years. We have seen this problem many times. Trees around a swimming pool grow into large shade trees that now shade the pool too much and drop too many leaves or needles. This then becomes a pool maintenance nightmare. These lovely large trees now add more value and character to the property then the old pool that is impossible to maintain. Even if a new pool is installed there would still be the same problems with the surrounding trees.
This Centennial Pool Removal project was a good challenge. We were tasked with removing the pool right before the house was to be listed.
Mackland has built a good reputation in the Denver pool removal industry. This gave the customer comfort that they were leaving the job in good hands. We obtained the permits and removed the pool within 2 weeks of initial contact . We recognized the importance of time and timing when selling a house so we gave this project priority over our other jobs. Some pool removals are an emergency and need to be expedited this was one of them. We even successfully built a ramp over a 18” tall brick masonry retaining wall in order to gain the correct. There is no hurdle we can’t get over!
Our final step was to supply the customer with a pool removal report. This could be shown to the prospective purchaser as proof that the pool was professionally removed.

Have you recently purchase a house with an old pool that hasn’t been opened in years? Has the pool in your backyard seen better days? Is your liner ripped or the plaster cracked? Are you wondering if there is a chance of Bringing Life Back to an Old Pool? Perhaps the time has come to remove it?
Bringing Life Back to an Old Pool – First Steps
The first step with concrete or gunite pools is to drain the water to best assess the situation. Depending on how long it has been sitting, you may need to clear out leaves and other debris as well. With vinyl liner and fiberglass pools, there is some risk involved with draining the pool. Fiberglass pools are lightweight and can move or float without the weight of the water holding it in place. Vinyl liners can shrink and shift.
If you opt to not drain the pool completely and the water is questionably green, time and effort can bring it back to clear. A process of removing all the organic debris, cleaning the sides and bottom, checking the water balance, shocking the pool and filtering the water can bring it back.
Alternatively, you can fill the pool with new water. We recommend using a water truck service. You can fill the pool from your hose but that takes time and with well water, you may be filling the pool with water high in minerals or metals.
Now you move on to the repairs. Concrete or gunite pools can have stains, rough texture, or leaks. All of these should be addressed and repaired prior to resurfacing. The pool will need to be prepped for the new surface, this can be achieved through sand blasting or hydro blasting. Then the pool surface finish material can be installed.
With vinyl liner pools, you may need to install a new liner. You may need new faceplates and gaskets as well.
So, as you can see there are many pros and cons as well as many decisions to be made about Bringing Life Back to an Old Pool. We have been involved in the Denver Pool Removal business for many years. Please contact us for the best advice.
